Aga Khan Medical Centre, Khorog

Hospital Information

Based on the Aga Khan Development Network's experience with strengthening the health system in different regions of Tajikistan, Aga Khan Health Service, Tajikistan (AKHS,T) has established the Aga Khan Medical Centre, Khorog (AKMC,K) as a private, not-for-profit hospital offering high quality health care to the community.

AKMC,K began operations in December 2018 through the provision of outpatient care, diagnostics and physiotherapy services. In April 2019, the hospital expanded its offerings to include inpatient, as well as emergency management services. The first phase of this expansion is supported with 48 beds and a provision to grow further, as needed.

AKMC,K complements and supports the Government of Tajikistan's efforts to provide quality diagnostic and treatment services not currently available at the 450-bed Khorog Oblast General Hospital (KOGH).

AKMC,K's primary catchment population is composed of residents of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast and the Afghanistan-Badakhshan border districts that do not have easy access to Faizabad, the capital of the province. AKHS,T is working closely with health care workers and government authorities on both sides of the border to ensure that patients within these districts are able to be referred to AKMC,K for care.

Outpatient and Inpatient Services

As part of its Phase I offering AKMC,K is providing diagnostic services including regional referral laboratory services, as well as imaging services including X-ray, CT-scan, mammography and high-end ultrasounds. In addition, there is a wide range of additional outpatient and inpatient services commissioned at the hospital including internal medicine, family medicine, accident & emergency care, surgical services, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, endocrinology, neuro-sciences, cardiology, oncology, dental, physiotherapy, pharmacy etc.

AKMC,K has two major operating theatres, a minor theatre for endoscopies, one C-Section room, two labour/delivery rooms, a high dependency unit and supporting facilities, including central sterilization and an educational and tele-consultation e-health facility. Inpatient facilities include a medical ward, maternity ward, surgical ward and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). There is a focus on service offering that is complementary to what the government health service currently provides.
