The Hospital’s visiting credentialed consultants offer a broad range of specialized expertise all major disciplines including dermatology, ENT, psychiatry, ophthalmology orthodontics, and orthopaedics to complement the full-time team.

Qualified nursing staff work with the consultants, many of which have undergone training in several specialist areas including casualty, neo-natal and intensive care.

International Standards and Working Practices

The Hospital is internationally recognised in its delivery of quality medical care. It maintains these standards rigorously by:

  • Maintaining ISO 9001 accreditation (attained in 2003);
  • Conducting weekly medical education sessions for junior and senior doctors, medical residents, medical interns, and nurses, clinical audits, quality improvement, mortality and morbidity reviews;
  • Maintaining infection control protocols and guidelines in line with International standards, including stringent testing in haematology, as an example;
  • Seeking national (NEQAS – National External Quality Assurance Service) and international (RIQAS – Randox International Quality Assurance Scheme) quality control for pathology;

Telemedicine and Telepathology

The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam is part of an international telemedical service. The service allows medical staff to consult worldwide experts by emailing patient notes, images and pathology results and images. Doctors have access to a network of international experts working at recognized institutions for a qualified second diagnosis of medical conditions.

Cardiac Diagnostics

The Cardiac Diagnostic Unit’s medical equipment and diagnostic facilities are the most developed in Tanzania, offering the latest services in radiology, cardiac diagnostics and pathology including:

  • Automated pathology services in the Hospital and Primary Medical Centres.

Radiology Services

The Hospital offers a wide range of radiology examinations using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray, fluoroscopy, Doppler ultrasound and mammography techniques. Besides basic chest, limbs, skull and abdomen examinations, a number of additional specialist investigations are available including:

CT Scan, MRI and Ultrasound are available 12 hours a day and X-ray services are available 24 hours a day. Emergency CT Scan and MRI investigations are available at any time of the day.

Pathology Services

The Pathology Department offers a comprehensive range of investigations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The department, under the guidance of highly experienced in-house clinical and anatomic pathologist, also has a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which is fully integrated with the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS). All automated instruments are interfaced with LIMS, allowing for seamless transfer/distribution of reports and images throughout the system. Services available include:
