Situated behind the Ismaili Mosque (Jamatkhana), the Aga Khan Primary Medical Centre, Mwanza started its operations in 1948 as a maternity home. Today, the PMC has evolved into an ISO certified health centre with a workforce of 30 staff providing an array of high quality primary care and unique specialist services to almost 2,900 patients each month. Overall, the centre provides in- and out-patient services, including minor emergency services, free maternal and child health (MCH) services, laboratory and diagnostics (ECG, ultrasound), and pharmacy services.
As part of the Aga Health Services Referral Network, the PMC also refers local patients to the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam or Nairobi, as well as to other public and private tertiary hospitals for special investigations and treatment. The centre also provides HIV Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) in partnership with Ministry of Health and Social Welfare under AMREF.
